I knew this would eventually happen, that I'd be perusing the obituaries for my blackout exercise and stumble upon someone I knew. I didn't actually know Shirley, but I was in jazz band at Whitworth College with her son, Scott, and often heard about the long-suffering "Richner's mom." (Yes, Scott was a class clown type often getting into mostly harmless trouble.) As is usually the case with obituaries, I learned so much about this woman that I had no way of knowing otherwise (even though she worked at the college, our paths did not cross), and in the process, gained some insight into the son I did know as well. Condolences, Scott. From all I heard, your mom was some great lady, even greater than I knew.
